Mississippi Delta
I spent a three day weekend touring the Mississippi Delta region in September 2007. The Blues music heritage is obvious in many places. Highway 61, the great blues highway, runs right up the middle of the Delta. Clarksdale seems to be rebuilding the economics of the city based on blues heritage. I was impressed by the low economic standards that seemed prevalent in the small towns. The State of Mississippi ranks 49th in average household income. And I visited towns where the local average was half that of the state. Many relate this to the adoption of the mechanical cotton picker in the 1960's. On the upside, everyone was friendly. More than once I had people go out of the way to help me with directions or suggestions.
